Our cultural experiences shape our values, perspectives, and behaviors. However, they vastly differ.

While this makes each of us unique, it also poses an issue, especially for those engaging in international dating.

While cultural differences with your date can make you love each other more, they can also get you lost in translation. Even two people from different provinces in the same country face arguments because of cultural differences; how much more if you’re from two different countries or continents?

That said, success in dating starts with awareness. Here are four cultural experiences you should expect when dating Asian women.

1. Eating a Lot of Food

Asians are known for their mouthwatering dishes, so much so that you can look forward to a full stomach whenever they invite you to the dinner table.

But that’s not the only good thing; food also helps communicate intentions.

Preparing food and sharing meals is the Asian way of caring; it’s a love language. For instance, when we have guests, we prepare plenty of food to communicate our hospitality. When someone’s having a hard time, we offer them food rather than ask them about their problem to show our support.

If you want to communicate your affection and appreciation for your date, eat the food she makes. If you can, change roles and be the one to do the cooking.

2. Meeting the Parents

Most Asian children look to their parents and other family elders for guidance in their studies, careers, and even relationships.

Because of this, your Asian date may introduce you to her loved ones at the outset of your relationship. While this may seem too soon, it’s her way of knowing whether you’re serious about your feelings for her.

Avoid messing up. Instead, be prepared.

When meeting your date’s parents, look presentable and be respectful. Bring them a gift, such as fruits or potted plants, to show your thoughtfulness and appreciation for raising your date.

3. Taking it Easy with Physical Affection

Most Asians are not keen on physical affection. It’s not because we lack affection or detest touch. However, we like to take things slowly.

So don’t try sneaking in a kiss on a first date and making your date uncomfortable. A slap in the face is the least of your worries. In the worst-case scenario, your date will cut off ties with you for violating her boundaries.

Try matching her pace.

4. Indirect Communication

Saving face or maintaining dignity, especially in the presence of family and friends, is part of most Asian cultures.

Because of this, we avoid talking about sensitive or negative topics. When we must, we do so through facial expressions, gestures, or words that hint at our feelings and thoughts.

Your date’s indirect communication may create confusion and misunderstandings, especially if it hasn’t been long since you got to know each other. However, understand that she isn’t intentionally complicating things.

Be patient and flexible. Respectfully ask for clarification instead of judging or arguing.

When dating Asian women, cultural differences can overshadow your love. Fortunately, you can avoid such a fate.

Remember the points I mentioned so you can thoroughly prepare to navigate the Asian dating scene.
