Many couples see physical intimacy as the foundation of a strong relationship. But how is physical intimacy seen in other countries like Thailand?

In Thailand’s dating scene, physical intimacy is closely related to their traditions and beliefs. Due to the country’s rich culture, there are numerous things you should know about before getting intimate with your Thai partner.

Public Display of Affection (PDA) in Thailand

Thailand has a conservative society, meaning that being physically intimate in public has some restrictions.

Kissing

Bigger Thai cities like Phuket and Bangkok find a peck on the lips and a kiss on the cheek acceptable because they’ve adapted to Western practices. In addition, they’re heavily influenced by foreign travelers visiting the area.

But it’s best not to overdo it to avoid getting stared at by the locals.

Making out in public is also unacceptable in Thai culture because it’ll make others feel uncomfortable. Making out can include French kissing or necking (kissing each other’s necks). Better to do it privately or discreetly.

Cuddling

Cuddling in public and hugging your partner for a long time is also a no-no. It’ll only attract stares and glares from the people around you. Worse, people might give nasty comments, like “Get a room.”

Hugging

A casual hug used to greet your friends is acceptable. But it can still be uncommon in most Thai provinces because locals have their unique greeting called the “Wai.”

This is done by bowing slightly and putting your hands in a prayer-like position. If the locals use this gesture to greet you, you have to do it in return.

Touching

Locking arms and holding hands are common in Thailand. But avoid being too touchy in public.

For example, avoid touching your partner’s legs in public because it’ll only be uncomfortable for other people to watch.

Instead, here’s what you can do to impress your potential Thai partner.

1.Being a gentleman never gets old. You can do this by adapting to Thailand’s overall tradition and culture, not only in dating.

2. Put effort into your appearance. Be mindful of what you wear during a date. If you’re a tourist, you should avoid dressing like a regular foreign traveler.

Instead, impress her by dressing up and grooming yourself, even if it’s your third or fourth date. Thailand might be a tropical country, but wearing shorts and a sleeveless top to a date will not impress your Thai partner.

3. Bring her to a fun, romantic place, not a club or bar. One great example is taking her on a day trip where you can enjoy each other’s company and the beauty of nature.

If not, you can take her to a local cafe where you can talk and learn more about each other.

Then again, nothing beats a classic romantic dinner date at a fancy restaurant. It’ll definitely make your Thai partner feel special.

In Thai culture, reputation is everything, so Thai women tend to be more conservative and will not condone public displays of affection. That said, dating a Thai might mean not being able to hold hands and getting a kiss on the first few dates.

In fact, it’s common to have a chaperone, especially on the first date. That person can be their friend or relative. So learn to manage your expectations. But most of all, have fun.

Best of luck!
